Packing

So, I’m guessing we all like a little road trip or a big, long vacation from time to time. Whether it’s a long weekend in St. Louis for a ball game or shopping or maybe camping and hiking at a state park or a longer distance sort of trip, I bet we all agree that it’s nice to be able to slip away from our responsibilities and just relax and have some fun now and then.

And if we’re planning those sorts of trips—the fun ones—we spend a lot of time looking forward to them, right? Wow, I can’t wait for—fill in the blank—oh, it’s gonna be so much fun!

And then suddenly the big day arrives and reality sets in and…you have to pack…

Yeah. Because as far as I know, they don’t make suitcases that pack for us. Okay, so if you’re a guy—if you’re anything like my husband—the packing isn’t that big of a deal. In fact, my husband travels so much, he’s got the packing thing down to a science. And yes, I know, I know. There are women who have it down, too.

JB, my husband, packing up our wine.
(This is the best kind of packing!)

But, here’s a confession. I am not one of those women who has packing down to a science. Or an art, if you want to look at it that way. And I’m not even talking about the actual packing the things into the suitcase and making room for everything. If there’s a queen of that, it’s either my mother-in-law or my sister-in-law…and for the record, they’re a bit more mathematically/logically minded than I am.

I hate packing. Hate. It. Because c’mon! How do I know what I’m going to feel like wearing once I get to where I’m going?? Sure, I have 27 pairs of super cute jeans (most likely an exaggeration, but it’s probably close for a guess…I LIVE in jeans) and some cute tops. But…my cute tops…are long-sleeved. Sure, they’re lightweight, but it’s spring…I want to look springy…Oh, and this is an anniversary trip, so yes, we might have a fancy dinner or two while we’re gone…I should pack a dress, right? And maybe another less fancy dress just for fun. After all, we’re going to Napa Valley! It’s okay to wear casual dresses when one goes to wineries, right? But…which dress…Right? Which begs the question…ladies? You know where I’m going, right? What shoes do I take? Of course, I don’t want to wear heels the entire trip. My feet would never forgive me. But I have to take a cute pair of heels to wear with the fancy dress…and casual sandals to wear every other day…

Okay, I think I’ve got everything I need…but…wait. What about flight days? Do I want to dress cute for the airport? (I don’t mean heels and dresses, but cute jeans and sandals) or…do I want to be comfy? I usually opt for comfy. Jeans and a sweatshirt. Tennis shoes….Because I’m too old to care about being cute. I can admit that. Too old to worry about it when I’m flying; I can save the cute outfits for the real vacation days. But…never fails. I get to the airport in my comfy go-to jeans, and a Victoria’s Secret sweatshirt and my tennis shoes…and…I see all sorts of ladies MY AGE ish who have on nice jeans and cute blouses and little denim jackets and super cute flats or sandals…and then I’m like oh…well, I could have done that. It’s not like jeans and blouses are uncomfortable like a suit of armor might be or something…

And…what about jewelry? Makeup? Hair products? Oh, and I guess I should take my laptop—working to get through book 2 in The Mississippi Queen Trilogy—and I HAVE to take my iPad, because I read on my Kindle app…and my phone, can’t go anywhere without it. Have to take pictures with it! And wait…where are my earbuds? Because who can read on a plane without earbuds and their own music to cut out all the other noise…besides…I read for a bit and eventually get wrapped up plotting the next book or the next…

Hmm…all of this packing for vacation makes me think I need a vacation…

And….let’s not forget…the one thing possibly worse than packing for a trip? Yep…unpacking and….the mountain of laundry we bring home to wash…added to the already existing mountain of laundry that grew in our absence…

Good thing we had fun in Napa and came home with more wine than laundry!
